First time I encountered a trough was when I was a kid, like 6 or 7, at an amusement park mens room. The thought of peeing into the same urinal simultaneously with other men/boys and them being able to see me made me feel embarrassed and I used the stall instead. These days I like using a trough, though I admit that it sometimes feels a bit intimidating due to the lack of privacy.

We have some urinals like these over here and they are only found in men's rooms. They are a pretty old style, designed to make the urinal shaped more like a toilet bowl.

Pee shyness often has nothing to do with being nervous about showing your private parts. Though, my pee shyness definitely had some aspect of that too. It felt embarrassing to have your penis out in a public setting even if it was a setting where it was totally normal to do so. I still didn't feel awkward going full nude in locker room etc. but there was something about just having my penis out of my pants that made me feel awkward.

I definitely get what you mean about more urinals being more comfortable. It's sometimes awkward when the restroom is small and there is only 2 urinals very close to each other, lol. I personally think there should be either 1 urinal, 3 urinals or more than three so that proper "urinal etiquette" can be followed (leaving one urinal empty unless it is very crowded and there's a lot of guys needing to pee).
