Another question of the week is long overdue. So here it is.....

Should prostitution be fully legal?

My own view is that it should be.

From a principled and moral stance I do not believe that the state has any right trying to interfere in  consenting sexual activity between consenting adults. Whether that activity occurs as a result of love, lust, a desire for fun, or simply an exchange of money or other goods is irrelevant. If someone is willing to pay someone else for sex, and that someone else is willing to provide it for that money, why should that be anyone else's business?

From a practical stance too I think we'd have much better outcomes if it was fully legal and under the benign protection of the law. Prostitutes themselves would be better protected and safer, and evil predators better guarded against. And prostitutes - mostly but not exclusively women - would not be criminalised for no good fucking reason.

Some people say it is not something they want to see on their street. But don't they realise that if fully legal it would be better and more safely regulated so they'd be less likely to see it on their street?

I think this is a no brainer really. It's mostly prudish pensioners and the fucking God squad who object.

I think "de criminalised".Where such behaviour causes a nuisance then the police should be able to act to deal with it,otherwise,leave people alone.

De-criminalisation - a kind of half way house where it is not technically legal but in which laws against it are not enforced - does not provide the girls with the full protection of the law. Legalised but with regulations as to when it where it can be touted publicly - ideally with much of it taking place behind closed doors - would minimise any nuisance it causes.

I think that the core of what Fanny meant is that, in his mind, something completely lawful is something people bothered by it should shove it up their asses and keep quiet since "it's lawful"

I would like to state that in my opinions, even the most lawful of things should be ass-kicked by police if it turns out to be a serious problem for any reasons

Legalize.

It's the oldest profession in the world, before any functional economy existed. You could say it's the original economic model for societies, a service in exchange for money, barter or another service.

As mentioned, it would protect prostitutes and patrons from criminal charges, and ensure much better safety and eliminate trafficking and pimps. Government is all about taxation, and they would be able to build brothels, and collect tax revenue. It's also none of their business what consenting adults want to do, whether money is involved or not. 

I mean is there really that much difference in buying a hooker for money as opposed to buying a woman a drink at a bar, having some conversation and then she goes home with you for a one night stand? It took longer but in the end, money in the form of a drink, in exchange for sex. Still simply two consenting adults. 

If it were legal, marriage rates would likely plummet as a lot of men, especially ones that can't get laid, would just buy prostitutes worry free. This would hurt the divorce business and put a lot of divorce attorneys out of work so there would be massive pushback from the whole legal profession in addition to religious voting bases. It may also threaten birth rates as a lot of men stay away from dealing with women on a relationship basis altogether. Not sure, just considering outcomes. But overall yeah I say legalize.

Am not so sure about that. Most people get into relationships because of love and companionship and a desire to be together, not just for sex. And most people have kids not merely as a by-product of sex but because they want to as a result of maternal and paternal drives. Were this not the case, what with condoms, the pill, and other forms of contraception, the avoidance of kids is easy most of the time. Few people would ever have any and we'd become extinct were it not for them actually wanting to.

There was just a huge prostitution ring bust in my city. IMO if they made prostitution legal there'd be more protections put in place for the men and women who choose to partake. Thus making it safer for everyone involved.

I would be interesting from a social point of view to understand WHY people become involved in prostitution.

Im sure that 99% of women DONT get involved because they like sex.If they do then its a nice bonus for them.But it will be the money that drives them in the main.Which is very sad really.Obviously men just like sex with many women as possible.

I was a regular user myself long ago,and the girls i spoke to were keen to make enough money to stop selling their bodies.Sure enough,they did perhaps enjoy the sex and meeting loads of guys,but none of them seemed to think it was a wise career choice.Over a few years,most of the girls i had seen,were gone after a very short while.

Then again,for myself,i was coming out of a relationship failure,and wanted a kind of "revenge" against my ex g/f...I didnt do it for the sex,but to make a point against her.I did become a little addicted then,maybe visiting a escort 2-3 times a month...not good.I eventually did stop years ago.

I did get to watch a few of them have a wee wee a few times though!😊

It's not surprising.  Nine out of ten people hate their jobs and only work because they need the money to survive.  I can't imagine sex work being that much different, except for the fact that it is so well paid that early retirement is much easier to achieve.

It's certainly true that some of the customers are complete arseholes, and if a girl meets enough of these it will drive her away from the job.  The ladies I have met were very appreciative of the fact that I was considerate of their feelings and treated them with respect and politeness.  Apparently many customers are not like that.

When I was 18 years old and a full time student,  I worked long hours as a pizza cook just to pay the rent.   If I could have got paid ten times my hourly rate for having sex with older or less attractive women,  I would have jumped at the chance.   Two hours of not very satisfying sex in exchange for twenty hours hard slog in a restaurant would have made my life a lot easier.

Actually,  thinking about it more.  My girlfriend at the time would probably not have been happy for me to do sex work, so I would probably have turned down the opportunity for that reason.  If not for that I would have been glad to do it.

Let's expand on the idea of women doing it for the money, which they do because most of the time it's the only way to pay the Bill's

Imagine if everyone was paid a living wage, this would end the petty theft to a point, no need for a social welfare system. This would free up money for governments to put towards something else. The whole prostitution thing would change, for the better. Business owners will not make quite as much but if your employees are paid appropriately, turn over will also be bill

O absolutely it would. In Canada criminals have just about more rights than law abiding citizens. If we kept criminals in jail instead of letting out after 5 years in a 20 year sentence and let the law abiding guy get a blowjob in the morning, crime would not exist up here

Sex is legal so then sex for money should be legal too if someone wants to get laid but can't then he or she goes to a prostitute pays and get laid  the one getting laid is happy and dosen't feel lonely and desperate etc and the prostitute get's money both wallk away happy what is the problem with that?

Having said that,  there are some couples with happy sexual relationships who are also happy to bring in sex workers for casual play and mutual enjoyment.   Nothing wrong with that if they both want to do it.

Yes, I think prostitution should be legal.  I see no harm in it.  There should be legal brothels where the girls are checked out monthly by a doctor and the customers must wear condoms.  This is practiced in some places like the state of Nevada here in the USA.  In this way, each hooker would be legit, with a weekly check and an annual tax form just like all other people who work at regular jobs.  It would be just another occupation.

However, I think street-walking prostitution should remain illegal.  I say this not based on moral grounds, but for the safety of the women and to help control STD's.  A bonus of the aforementioned system is that the women are supervised by a Madam who ensures that the prostitutes are clean and attractive for the customers.  Most street hookers are on crack, meth, or other drugs and their personal hygiene is horrible. 

So, for these reasons, I would vote to make it legal all over the USA.  Then, the government would get their bloody tax money from them.  That's really all they care about.  That's why it's illegal, not for moral reasons, despite their claims to the contrary.

I agree.  If you find prostitution abhorrent, don’t be a prostitute or or pay someone for sex.   

I find a lot of legal business practices disgusting and immoral.   I don’t participate and it’s no problem for me.
