I was traveling today and witnessed some public peeing at the airport that made we think of this topic. Have you ever peed in public or some place unconventional at an airport?

Most of the public peeing I’ve witnessed at airports has been in the parking lots or garages. I think people often rush out after a long flight and only realize that have to pee before getting in the car.  Or they realize they have a long drive from the airport or to the airport and should pee before they drive home or go into the airport. 

I used to utilize long term airport parking and numerous times I would see puddles between cars. Sometimes after business flights I would have a few drink in the lounge, get on the plane fly home and realize I needed to pee before hitting the road. I would usually go in between cars, on the light poles or in garages on the wall in front of the car. One time I was on a business trip and ran into a girl I used to party with at the airport. I invited her into the lounge with me and we started drinking while waiting for our plane. The plane was really delayed and she kept drinking. We actually agreed that I would give her a ride when we landed and if we made it home in time we were going to a club with mutual friends. She very fit brunette, about ‘5”7 with a yoga body and a tramp stamp tattoo, super social and worked in media tech sales. When we landed we trekked to my car in a massive open parking lot. When we got to the car I decided to tell her “I have to pee before we go" and started walking to a light pole in front of the car beside us. She said "me too” and walked in front of my car as I was already unzipping. I started to pee a stream onto the concrete base of the light pool which ran onto the pavement below. She went between the nose of my car and the car facing mine and began to wiggle her butt to get down her tight jeans. Another timeI was flying out for business on a Sunday. I parked in the airport garage near a corner and immediately heard the sound like pee hitting the pavement. I walked to the front of my car and looked towards the corner. There I saw two 20-something girls in cutoff shirts with short shorts around their ankles pissing torrents in the corner of the garage behind cars. One girl looked up at my and said “sorry we came straight from a pool party.”  I said, no problem I didn’t come from a pool party but I’m about tot do the same thing. What I witness today was probably more typical of the airport peeing in some ways and in some ways not. I think parents often have kids pee at airports before getting in the car or after arriving. I’ve especially witnessed this in public in Europe and Asia. In France, I once arrive at my rental car in Nice and heard liquid flowing, only to find it was a a really attractive young mother mother having her kids douse the parking garage wall before they set off. Early this month my wife had the kids pee behind the car in an outdoor rental car lot while I was loading the car before we set out on an hour drive to our vacation destination. But today was particularly bold. I returned my rental car and was waiting for my colleague who was using the bathroom. I stepped outside the rental terminal at a very modern and nice airport to get some fresh air. Directly outside the terminal I saw a stream of liquid making its way across the concrete walkway. There was an asian family and the mother was behind a low bench holding her daughter who was creating the puddle which then ran a good 10ft+ across the walk way. This was surprising because the bathroom was literally within sight, maybe 20M away inside the terminal and they were talking so loudly amongst each other that they certainly attracted attention.  It was also a very busy area, and the stream was running in such a way that many people were likely to wheel their suitcases right through it. The family packed up and left before my colleague came out so I managed to capture a photo of the puddle as a visual.

Never of this nature, but you do have me wondering what part of the world you're in? I do fly a lot but rarely utilize the parking lots. Maybe that should change 🙂

Most of my airport experiences have involved some lines. Not long ago though I got off my flight and there was indeed a line at the ladies room.  I stopped to observe for a moment and one of the flight attendants who had been on my flight hurried over. She was maybe in her early 50s with dirty blonde hair and on the tall side, aided by some heels. When she saw the line she made a face and a sight and joined looking very stressed out. She did not make any traditional desperate signs but she kept peeking ahead as if she was looking for a secret stall or considering asking the women ahead of her to cut. Unfortunately for me the line snaked out of sight and I did not wait for her to come out. Had she been a bit further out I would have tried to strike up a chat since we had been on the same flight  but it was not meant to be.

I do think a lot of people exit flights desperate...

I go through US destinations like LA, SF, NYC and Miami and in EU like London, Paris, Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Nice, Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon, Athens. In the past I also flew into major Asian destinations but less frequently now. 

Mostly I'm in parking lots/garages for rental cars these days. In the times before Uber I would often park in short and long term lots when flying.

Thanks for your posts! I fly a lot too but I admit peeing has never been on my mind while passing through the airport lots. If I am arriving at the airport my mind is just to get checked in as soon as possible and if I am fixing to drive home, my mind is to just get on the road as soon as possible. May I ask what regions you have noticed the most peeing? I typically transit through the US so I am not sure if it happens less there or if I just haven't paid enough attention!!

I would say I've seen the most peeing in airport parking lots in the EU-- France and Spain. I think that reflects overall openness to peeing in those cultures. In the US I don't see any particular pattern but remote lots without bathrooms and large urban sprawl that makes for long airport drives are probably factors. I don't think its frequent enough to go scout them but you will see puddle marks on the pavement or in the garages at some. 

I don't have a large enough or current enough sample size on Asia. 

Thinking back on these incidents reminds me of another funny one. Years ago I was walking through a large west cost airport near terminals for Air China flights. This airport had a "pet relief" area with fake grass and a fake fire hydrant. As we walked by my wife pointed out a Chinese family that were having their two kids use the pet relief area. The mother was holding the daughter over the fake grass while the son wet the fire hydrant. My wife spent quite a bit of time in China on business and made some funny comments about it and asked in jest if I would also like to go use the pet relief area before we boarded the plane.  I laughed but now every time I go by that area I think that, yes, I would like to go mark that territory if not the high risk of getting kicked out of the airport or arrested.

In an airport concourse there are usually gate areas that have no passengers waiting for a flight.  If you do a careful reconnaissance of camera positions, you may find a hidden spot.  I have only peed like that twice, both times behind a partition or other structure. Did not release a full bladder, though, just modest puddles.

I see! That's what I kind of figured. I'll have to pay more attention -- especially in Europe!

Also I have definitely seen the doggie relief areas you are talking about. Agreed it would be risky though!

I love that you did this though -- gutsy! In one of my fictional stories I had one of the characters go behind a baggage carousel so I'm happy to hear someone was at least able to do something kind of similar.

While waiting for a taxi after landing late at night, I saw a dog utilising an outdoor pet relief area across the taxi-way. The owner was facing away from me but turned and glanced my way briefly before reaching down to his jeans with his free hand and a moment later I could faintly make out the glimmer of a stream hitting the fake turf from between the man’s legs. He stood and peed for quite a while after his dog had already finished. Eventually he walked away as though nothing had occurred.

A few years back I took a trip to the west coast for a family wedding. My plan was to fly out to SFO, go to the wedding in Monterey, then rent a car and drive down the Pacific Coast Highway to LA, then take Amtrak back to the east coast.  

 

While driving down the PCH, it was hot so I drank alot of water and the comfort stops were frequent.  Many of these were beach outhouses with multiple stalls and open structures so more than a few times I could hear other people peeing in the adjacent cubicles. Nobody seemed to care though.  

 

When I made it to Burbank, my plan was to drop the rental there (to avoid driving into LA), then hop a train to LA Union Station, spend the night, and take another train east the next day.  The traffic was getting worse the closer I got to LA, and I could feel the need to pee increasing.  Before getting to Burbank airport/rail station, I was desperate. Airport parking garage peeing is the best. The garages are usually far from toilets so its a very logical place for peeing. This past summer I was flying into an airport in Spain and picking up a rental car. I literally remember peeing in this very garage in my youth. My last airport/airplane story unfortunately. Its long (ish).
