DOTvpn is user selectable with multiple choice of countries: currently iceland, spain, NY and LA, Canada, Ireland and Isle of Mann.  Every few days those server addy's are changed.  I find little difference in lag times between them.

UK Fappers Rejoice: Porn Age Verification Scheme Delayed Again

Underage wankers, rejoice. A British government scheme designed to stop underaged web users from viewing online pornography has again been delayed, the BBC reports.

The changes, which would have required UK internet users to verify their age, were supposed to take effect on July 15, but because the UK 'forgot' to tell European regulators about the plan, they must wait to implement it. Completing the process of notifying the EU could take a staggering six months.

 

Culture Secretary Jeremy Wright told the House of Commons that the UK hadn't informed Brussels about key aspects of the plan: an "important notification process was not undertaken for an element of this policy."

Wright said it was still the government's intention to activate the age-checking system...at some point.

For those who haven't been following the story, the plans for compulsory age-checks for UK porn viewers, which the government has described as the first of its kind in the world, were designed to stop children from "stumbling across" inappropriate content. The plan will require pornographic sites to verify the age of UK visitors by law. If they fail to comply, they could face being blocked by Internet Service Providers.

It's unclear how the rule will be enforced, but it's suspected that sites might be required to ask users to upload photos of their ID.

Critics claim teens will find a way to circumvent the new rules. Astoundingly,  the rules will exempt anyone using a VPN to make it look like they aren't in the UK. Otherwise, they will just migrate to platforms not covered by the law: Twitter, Reddit and image-sharing community Imgur will not be required to administer the scheme because they fall under an exception. To qualify for policing under the rule, more than one-third of a site's content must be pornographic.

Also, sites that host pornography but don't do so "on a commercial basis" are exempt from the law.

The law's proponents acknowledge that it is "not a silver bullet," but instead a first step.

As far as I can tell, if you are not in the UK (or not browsing from a UK IP address) you will not be affected whatsoever. (However I imagine many other European countries are likely to implement similar things in the future if this implementation goes reasonably well).

However, for users who are in the UK, PeeFans will unfortunately have to comply or risk being severely fined or blocked by ISPs.

It looks like there will be one main system that all the main porn sites use, where you verify yourself once either using a personal document, or by purchasing a specific card in a store so no data is linked to you when verifying, and you can then access all porn sites that are using this system. Whilst not ideal, it sounds as secure as it can be and relatively painless, so I will try to get us on board with that. So in theory, you could buy a card at almost any shop (if you can prove you're over 18), enter the code online, and then can continue as usual with sites like pornhub and peefans etc.

I would like to stress again that whilst I support stopping young children accessing such explicit content, I am not in favour of this ineffective additional verification for users in this way, but we will simply have to implement it for UK users in some form (from July onward).

Of course, as mentioned already, VPNs are extremely cheap and would bypass this restriction, as you would no longer be accessing the site from a UK IP address.

I'll work to get the best solution possible, but if you're in the UK please be aware we'll have to add something.

Several hair brained schemes were dreamed up here, none of them worked, and although there is one in place, it relies on the general population to report 'offensive' sites. Nobody ever does , lol. There is now an ad campaign on Australian tv, targeting parents to educate their kids Internet / social media activities. (Primary school age, teenagers already know everything)

This is how it should have done ages ago, instead of all the weird ideas that cropped up. At one point, they were talking about cutting the entire country off the internet, and making it a copy of the Chinese internal Internet. That one caused riots and was quickly dropped.

The people in power are so clueless with the advances in technology. What would happen if the EU said 'no, you can't do that'?

You don't find many computer software people in politics,  for probably the same reason you don't find them selling dodgy used cars.

Success in software development requires a deep instinct for logic and a solid respect for the truth.  People who are built this way absolutely despise the slimeballing, corruption, obfuscation and deception of politics. They just can't bear to take part in it, even for a higher goal.

There are plenty of us involved in politics - I am an active member of a UK political party - who also hate all the "slimeballing, corruption, obfuscation and deception of politics". But we tend to be the ordinary foot soldiers of politics, in it because we believe in something, volunteering our efforts for a cause and being wholly unpaid for it. We are entirely different from many of those climbing the greasy pole, in it as much for their careers as for any cause quite often.

Indeed my party currently has a leadership which to some extent bucks the trend but is under constant attack by it's own more careerist MPs. Honest politicians who believe in something are seen as a grave threat, apparently.

But generally, many of the ordinary foot soldiers of politics are not automatically the corrupt slimeball types. They will often remain mere foot soldiers because of that.
