Sex Bizarre One

I hope that I have chosen the right area to review one of the best vintage publications produced that depicts the art of urolagnia. My intention is to review each available issue of Sex Bizarre and post the cover and where available the dust cover produced to cover the explicit photograph on the first page. I have located scanned issues on the internet and reconstructed the magazines digitally adding personal commentary to the pages. The issues are then converted to PDF's. I hope you enjoy my reviews and do feel free to comment with feedback on my endeavours.

In the late sixties and early seventies Jens and Peter Theander were keen to exploit the new relaxed censorship laws in Denmark. They realised that pornography needed to evolve into more explicit depictions of the wide range of fetishes in human sexuality. Sex Bizarre was born in c.1970, with a remit to show acts of urolagnia and scatology. The main publication, Color Climax paved the way, the brothers retained the same dust cover for retail, the size and design and the same attention to high resolution photography in vivid, naturalistic colour. As befits one of the key selling points of their publications, attractive models were enlisted to perform erotic stories often starting with group gatherings around food and drink. Four women and two men, drinking Danish beer begin to fondle and caress each other. Two of the women, who look remarkably alike, (perhaps they are sisters), break off for a lesbian embrace in the bathroom. One of them sits on the toilet and urinates, the camera captures it in vivid detail and it is used as the cover image. One of the guys pops in, perhaps he’s in need of a pee having drunk too much beer. Kissing and oral sex continue until he decides to squat over the toilet to relieve his aching bladder. One of the sisters looking on seems fascinated by the piss stream, his foreskin pulled back to expose his glans and pee-hole. We see this in another close-up photo, in fact there is excellent photography throughout, the final shots of the young blonde licking the older woman’s cunt is a delight. For the purposes of this thread, I will warn members of any future issues that depict scatology.

Hard-Core pornography magazines were illegal in the UK and many other countries, but the Theanders were keen to create a global trade, printing, publishing and distributing printed and filmed material throughout the world. In the UK, their magazines were sold ‘under-the-counter’ in Adult Bookshops. One friend tells me that he visited a bookshop where the owner invited him back to browse hard-core porn in an open suitcase. Shops were frequently raided, owners fined but then stocks were miraculously replenished. These magazines are now available widely on the internet, thanks to those who have scanned the original publications with varying resolution and quality. I became fascinated with the age, the seventies seemed to be a great decade in the history of porn.

I'll be following this thread with interest 🙂. One thing I remember from hard-core magazines of this type, but perhaps 10-15 years later, was the multi-lingual captions for some of the stories. Did this first edition have that?

Great idea indeed. I look forward to reading your reviews.   I bought some issues of this magazine in the 1980s and they were the first pictures I had ever seen of women peeing.  I absolutely loved them. It will be a real treat to read your opinions and reactions to the scenes and stories.

I remember going into sex shops in Amsterdam in the 80's and being mesmerised by the contents of Sex Bizarre and Color Climax. They paved the way for watersports magasines in that era.

No text in the first issue at all, that came later. I'll mention it in later reviews, English, German and Danish I think.

Yes, I've been to Amsterdam a few times, the first time on a student visit. We walked the streets, but dare not enter any of the shops, some had magazines displayed in the windows. Most major European Cities would have had zones that had sex shops, live shows and prostitution. Soho, London in the 1970's was controlled by organised crime and the shops were constantly subject to vice squad raids.

In Australia, in the days before everyone owned a VCR, sex shops often sold illegal, hardcore porn mags like Sex Bizzarre. Shops were regularly raided by the police (our tax dollars being put to good use, lol), but it didn't stop them selling hardcore stuff - the fines were probably fairly miniscule, compared to the money that could be made. I guess the sales of magazines would have declined as more and more people got VCRs. I can remember buying a couple of watersports VHS tapes, but I can also remember buying a tape in which a scene of a woman peeing on a guy had been edited out.

Sex Bizzarre magazines were the first pee porn I ever saw, and I was surprised to see pee included as part of what was otherwise fairly vanilla content.

Amsterdam was, at the time a very safe place to walk around as the shops, cinemas and girls relied on tourists for their trade so their pimps made sure there was no crime. Last time I went, which was a few years ago, I felt very unsafe due to the huge number of imigrants roaming the streets.

Soho seemed the complete opposite, in fact I am amazed Soho survived at all, it was such an unwelcoming place.

That's interesting, I never figured on Australia being part of the global 'porn' network! Excuse my ignorance. Color Climax Corporation shot films at the same time, 16mm, then converted to 8mm for re-sale in adult shops and mail order. They then ventured into VHS Cassettes, creating better quality films, these were also sold in sex shops.

Not at all, any comments help contextualise my project. Holland had/has a very relaxed view on censorship and vice, although I have heard that they are trying to 'clean-up', in much the same way New York, (in and around Times Square) did in the 1990's. The problem with the UK, as I understand it was the re-selling of counterfeit Danish magazines, using the covers to produce tame soft-core images. You're right about Soho.

Sex Bizarre Two

 

There’s no specific date of publication for the second issue of Sex Bizarre, but I’m guessing that it must around 1970. Sex Bizarre was just developing into ever more interesting narratives but generally the scenario remained the same, couples meeting for group sex in an apartment indulging in oral and intercourse before spicing up the proceedings with a little golden shower our two! No difference in number two, two men, two women. Have to say that the men in this issue are particularly attractive, on has an outstanding, or should that be ‘upstanding’ cock. The apartment is dressed in mid century accoutrements, imagine an ‘Ikea’ like set with prints of paintings and black and white fashion photography from the era. The couples sip Danish beer and there’s a nod to that Roman Orgy cliche with a bunch of grapes. They move to a bedroom, suck and fuck before one of the women decides to take a pee. In the first issue the peeing took place in where it should be, the toilet! However, in a nice twist, the brunette pisses into a glass bowl. It’s the type of Pyrex bowl that you might find in a kitchen. She holds it between her legs in a standing position, closely observed and supported by one of the guys. The photography is sharp and colourful capturing the splashes of golden urine in close-up. (See the cover shot attached). The issue pushes the boundaries further as the brunette kneels before one of the guy’s, he’s holding his flaccid penis in readiness to pee over her. In the next few shots, we see her wide open mouth the droplets of pee entering it and soaking her breasts and body. Meanwhile the other woman mounts custom built chair that looks like the type a gynaecologist might use to inspect a vagina. The brunette holds the glass bowl beneath her as she pees into it, their piss mingling together. Unusually, the scanned magazines lack the images of the male ejaculation, usually carried out over the body or face of the female. It seems a bit odd that this is omitted, given the explicit nature of the peeing action.

Sex Bizarre Three

New ground is explored in this issue but before I continue my review, I have to issue a warning of scat content. Again the date of publication is not available in my scanned version, but I’m surmising that it must be c1971/72. For the first time there is printed story, printed on columns beside the relevant images. The basic premise of the story is the hiring of a prostitute to satisfy a businessman’s bizarre tastes. His name is Allan Berg, and he is photographed on location in the heart of Copenhagen, picking up the attractive whore, Birte. The climb into a taxi and drive to an apartment, adorned in a similar style to the previous issues. Birte is wearing one of those full length afghan coats, a signifying garment of the 1970’s. Money is exchanged and Berg gets her to perform a sexy striptease before him. Throughout the magazine, Berg remains fully clothed and resembles a door to door salesman. As she strips naked, she displays her vulva, and Berg uses a bottle of Carlsberg to penetrate her. He then requests that she takes a pee in a glass fruit bowl, placed on a glass coffee table. Again, the photography is excellent, in fine macro detail. There’s an excellent centre piece, of her pissing into the bowl, she is very hairy in the pubic region. But then the action takes a turn, as he locates the special chair used in Sex Bizarre 2, enabling Birte to spread her legs real wide, (see cover). A shallow bowl is placed beneath her bottom, and this is where the discerning reader might want to look away. After she has finished, Berg readily gives cunnilingus before fucking her in the chair and ejaculating over her pubic hair. The model looks like one of the sisters in the first issue of Sex Bizarre, the Theander Brothers were beginning to gather a roster of male and female ‘models’. I guess rather like a fashion magazine would have a roll-call of models available for photo-shoots. I would speculate that they were asked beforehand if they were willing to participate in such acts that are obviously so private. When I browse the pages of the magazines, it does seem that they are totally comfortable with their acts, there is no evidence of stress or coercion, but who knows?

Sex Bizarre Four

 

Printed and published in 1972, Sex Bizarre Four has no accompanying story line to the images, but follows a customary narrative, two couples meet in an apartment, now established as a staged set, to drink and chat before sexual activity takes place. The twist in this issue is the self-advertising of the Color Climax product. The Theander Brothers were clearly in the business of expanding their unique porn empire, and that included films. To watch their films you needed an 8mm projector, the type used by people to shoot holiday films. This analogue technology came in the form of a reel of film that had to be threaded on to the projector. The two couples in Sex Bizarre Four, watch a porn film in this manner. Apparently the films were prone to jamming or burning out in the projector. The participants are young, fit and athletic, the blonde (featured on the cover) has a shaven pussy, whilst the other young woman wears a dark wig styled in a bob. The blonde, kick starts the action by unbuttoning her plaid shirt to reveal her soft natural breasts. The idea being that they have been turned on by watching the films. In fact one of the guys has a film camera, which he takes into the bedroom as the fucking and sucking starts. It’s not long before one of the women pees directly on the younger guy’s face, then everyone joins in, perhaps the first time that pissing over faces and bodies is depicted. One more observation to conclude, I note that the pee is yellow, so judging by the expressions on the faces, you can tell that the urine is strong and tasty! Unlike contemporary piss-porn where models are asked to drink plenty of water to achieve a ‘cleansed’ taste.

I only bought a couple of Sex Bizzare mags, but I do remember wondering why the women quite often wore wigs, Was the wig supposed to be some sort of disguise? Filming pee porn must have been a bit trickier than filming vanilla porn - the performers had to be ready and able to pee on command, and if a scene didn't go to plan, you couldn't go back and do a second take. I'm thinking the blonde with the shaved pussy in SB 4 would have been a rarity for 1970s porn - all the women in the SB mags I bought had pubic hair.

In the very first issue of SB there's a model who is shaved, but you are right to point out that the norm back in the 1970's was not to shave, not even a 'Brazilian'. If the 'wig' was meant to be a disguise of some sort, then obviously it didn't work. The Theander brothers did advertise for 'models', but they also employed prostitutes and some 'swingers' and 'exhibitionists' who took the opportunity to expose themselves on camera. I note also that the Color Climax Corporation published a magazine called 'New Cunts', specialising in the shaved pudenda. I find this amusing...imagine popping into a shop buying a newspaper and then asking for the latest issue of New Cunts! I also note that the Sex Bizarre scenarios all take place within a furnished set, there seems to be no concession to items of clothing, carpets, rugs, chairs, beds getting soaked with piss. I wonder whether they employed cleaners!! 😂

In the late 60s and early 70s,  wigs in different colours and styles were basically a fashion accessory for women.  Shopping malls had "wig boutiques."  I never noticed that this had changed until you mentioned it,  but now you point it out,  I haven't seen a woman wearing a wig for a long time.

Sex Bizarre Five

 

For the second time in the history of this magazine, defecation by two females is featured, so I have censored the front cover in the interests of this forum. Essentially the story, (with no text) centres around the notion of voyeurism. We could be looking at two young students in a house or Halls of Residence provided by Universities to accommodate them. We see them in their dressing gowns, towels around their necks, about to enter the private room of the shared building. The ‘Peeper’ bides his time, he’s wondering why two girls are showering together and is in for a rare treat.

It’s worth seeking out the accompanying film to this issue of Sex Bizarre, simply called ‘Shithouse Peeper’, it can be found, albeit in a degraded version from the original 8mm film.
