Hot Tub Pee Etiquette

As a hot tub owner, I frequent hot tub owners' online discussion forums. They're a good source of info, tips and ideas. The topic of peeing in and around hot tubs is actually discussed fairly frequently. There's not really any general consensus on "etiquette," it's more of a general understanding that people are going to pee in the tub, so it's usually more of a focus on how to treat it afterward, rather than whether or not to do it in the first place.

But over the course of reviewing these online discussions, it has become apparent to me that peeing in hot tubs is pretty common, it's pretty easily treated (with "shock" and similar), and it's not really considered a big deal. Hot tub owners have the general attitude of "pee happens," especially if alcohol is involved.

Some do speak of having a designated "pee spot" as well. Often in the grass, behind a garage or shed, etc. Peeing over the edge seems to be common too.

Also, I have been pretty surprised by the percentage of hot tub owners who go naked. I wish that was an option for my wife and I, but our tub can be seen by neighbors unfortunately, and she'd never go for it.

My wife and I always go naked in ours and we back onto a fairly busy road just have to be quick with house coat removal

Nice! How did that begin? Did your wife take some convincing?

Do you (or she) ever step out of the tub to pee? If so, are you standing there naked?

The house in Kansas has a big hot tub , it will hold 14 people . Its in a gazebo with a trellis with grapes  all around , So when Ruth and me are in it. Always naked  and one of us has to pee , we do , better then getting out walking back into the house , and besides watching her pee drives me nuts . and it has a lot of filters and a timer drip for the correct PH level ..

I mean compared to a pool, the volume of water in a hot tub is so much smaller, I wouldn’t necessarily go out of my way to pee in it if a pool or pool shower were available. But if I have to go while I’m in it, zero chance I get out. I’ve definitely had my fair share of pees in hotel hot tubs and my gyms hot tubs.

I was always under the impression that everyone (or like 90% of people) peed their suits when in any kind of water--pool, hot tub, ocean, pond, lake, river, etc.  Quietly and without fanfare, of course.  Maybe because that's what we were instructed to do as kids and it's always just been 2nd nature to me.  Hot tubs generally are pretty nasty in terms of germs/disease.  Skin rashes like "hot tub folliculitis" are common and caused by bacteria.  Legionnaire's disease has even come from hot tubs in rare instances, so pee would be the least of your worries!

Wanted to comment here again. I was in the hot tub tonight with a friend who shares some enjoyment for this. Knowing my personal feeling about the tub, she sat over the edge to pee outside. It was very sexy and I enjoyed watching quite a bit. Likewise, I stood up and pissed outside the tub, she enjoyed the angle there as well. Good times to be had not peeing in the tub, while in it.

YES!! This is what I’m talking about!! Back in hs my ex used to do this - stand and piss over the ledge onto the deck. So easy.

Unless we have company, my wife and I always go naked if we are together. If I am alone, I go naked too.   Several reasons;  it saves washing swim suits, it is a nice feeling, I find air bubbles from the jets fill my shorts and makes them buoyant, which is annoying, and of course when we are together it is better for enjoying each other’s bodies.   Our hot tub is in a wooden building which does have windows that are slightly tinted.   Neighbours could probably see in if they really wanted to, but it is not like we are running round the garden naked (well OK, sometimes we go from the back door to the hot tub building naked too, but usually only early morning or after dark).  If they are that fussed that they try to see us naked through the windows then we don’t care and let them have the view.

@Alfresco I totally understand about the inconvenience of swimsuits in this regard, and agree. In fact, my wife has designated a particular swimsuit of hers to be the hot tub swimsuit because it's sort of deteriorated from the heavy chlorination.

I've thought about how to make the hot tub area more private, to better allow for going naked, but since we're surrounded by neighbors, the only way to do it would be to have some sort of designated structure. There isn't a lot of flexibility as to where the hot tub goes, so I'd have to build around it.

But part of what we like about going in the hot tub is looking up at the stars, so having a building/structure would eliminate that, unfortunately.

Yes, I can appreciate the idea of looking up at the stars from the hot tub.   The structure has advantages and disadvantages for sure.   Maybe we need a removable roof.   But I sure enjoy being in there with my wife naked and I love that she often gets out of the hot tub to get dry and just stands there naked and pees on the wooden decking floor of the building.   She wouldn't do that if it wasn't made discrete by the building.   In fact it is very sexy that she prefers to pee on the floor of the building than to go outside and pee on the grass - she knows that it seems more sense to pee outside than inside on the floor but she isn't going outside to pee in view of others - especially if she is naked.  She knows I love it when she does it, so does it for her convenience and that suits me fine.  That decking floor has received a lot of pee and I don't often rinse it away but it doesn't smell or anything so she keeps doing it.  Admittedly it isn't like a weekly event or anything as she doesn't go in the hot tub that often and we have it drained over the winter so the floor gets a rest for a few months.   I know that might sound weird because it is great in the winter, but we are trying to save a bit on the costs, especially since the electricity prices went sky high.
