These are caused by super-heated plasma getting trapped in the Sun's magnetic field as it get twisted and loops above the surface. Mediterranean seaturtle I saw one of them in an Aquarium, and though I couldn't directly interact with it, I can swear to you all she (it was a female) was the cutest and most gentle creature I have ever seen!!!
