Automatically embed smileys

Not sure if I used the right terminology in the title but I'll try to explain.

On many forums and previously on this forum I believe, certain smileys would automatically embed. For example :) would change to  automatically. Is it at all possible to add this?

Have added all the basic ones you'd expect  etc

Let me know if you come across any others you'd expect would be embedded but aren't.
