A Small Rant - Hotel Charges

I booked a hotel room for the ladies last year for The Australian Open this year. $2850 for 8 nights (c'mon, it is for my ladies, lol)

They email me confirming the booking date and check in, and ask for more money on arrival, $450 security deposit or some such thing, same room, same services.

Can they do this? Is it legal? Why didn't they ask for this when I paid a year ago?

I know they have the usual cop out ..... errr disclaimer, that they can change prices without notice, but this just seems wrong, like its a blatant rip off for visitors to this event.

Anyone had a similar kind of experience?
