A Golden Opportunity: How 'Pee on Earth' is Making a Splash for the Environment and Social Norms

 

Billions of liters of water are wasted everyday flushing urine. 'Pee on Earth Day' was an event aimed at promoting the idea of urine as a free, abundant and surprisingly clean source of nutrients and hydration for plants, recycling urine instead of flushing it down the drain.

While the initiative has been happening on June 21st for years, social stigmas have hindered it's success, which is why organizers smashed many social norms this time. Urination was renamed to "fertilization" to disassociate it from being just a waste product. There were no privacy measures nor segregation, people of all genders were encouraged to not only relieve themselves in front of each other, but teach each other about their needs and methodology, with the goal being to make everyone comfortable with seeing others "Pee on Earth".

A wide range of "textures" available for attendees to "fertilize", including grass, soil, sand, broadleaf weeds, moss, gravel, and leaf litter. Some of these new additions, like sand and gravel, were part of the initiative to destigmatize outdoor urination, while broadleaf weeds were an example of what urine can kill.

The event also encouraged participants to take an environmentally friendly approach when it came to cleaning themselves after 'fertilizing'. This included promoting the use of recycled toilet paper, washing with water using portable bidets provided at the event, or the most environmentally-friendly method of drip-drying.

To enable maximum participation and to help people contribute multiple times, ample hydrating drinks were offered. Hydration stations were set up with a variety of beverages - water, juices, and herbal teas - all aimed at increasing urine output in a healthy manner.

There were many satisfied attendees eager to share their experiences with the event.

Females

Sarah Johnson, 21, Social Media Manager: "I took advantage of the hydration stations, so I managed to 'fertilize' four times. I started with the most natural way, I lifted my dress and squatted on the grass, releasing a nice yellow stream between my legs. Next, I used the soil and chose to kneel which was a lot more discreet for me. The third time was moss and I decided to challenge societal norms by standing. It was a bit awkward initially, but I soon got the hang of it, and a lot of dudes watched with astonishment. Finally, I used a FUD on the broadleaf weeds, it felt good being able to aim at these pesky things, the organizers promised that urine kills weeds. I felt empowered as I challenged the societal norms and each texture brought a unique experience. My favorite was the grass, it felt the most natural. I had no idea men have such big bladders, some of them peed literally forever.

Beth Wilson, 28, Software Engineer: "I peed twice during the event, both times squatting. The first time was on soil, I dropped my pants and panties to my knees and peed for a good 30 seconds. Being in the open and squatting beside a man was a bit unnerving initially. To fill up quickly i tried several of their herbal teas, and learned that bidets actually use less water than toilet paper from one of the information booths. The second time I went on peat, this time while still dropping my pants, I pulled my panties to the side, and I held a conversation with an uncircumcised man while both us were peeing. Like him, I drip-dried. Soil was my favorite, I loved seeing it turn into mud. What I learned about men is that uncircumcised men retract their foreskin to pee."

Maria Fernandez, 30, Nurse: "I attended the event and chose to fertilize the grass. I squatted behind a small bush which gave me some privacy yet kept me in the spirit of the event, and I tried the recycled toilet paper, which worked just as well as regular toilet paper. It was liberating to step out of societal constraints. I learned that men need a lot of space around them to comfortably relieve themselves without splashing."

Priya Patel, 32, School Teacher: "I 'fertilized' thrice during the event, each time using a different technique. I squatted on the soil in the normal manner. I took off my pants, pretended my panties were bikini bottoms, sat on the sand, and pulled them aside, and after I finished, I buried it like a naughty little girl. For the grass, I tried stood using a technique that my grandmother taught my mother who taught me. For cleaning myself, I've been using water since the day I was potty trained. This event was a break from the norm and made me realize how adaptable we can be when we put societal norms aside. I thought I knew everything about how men pee, but I was shocked at how much urine comes out when they shake.

Zoe Hudson, 24, Accountant "The 'Pee on Earth' event was a unique experience. I 'fertilized' four times in total. The first time, I used the gravel. I lifted my dress up and held my underwear aside. It was different, but liberating in its own way. After rehydrating at one of the hydration stations, I 'fertilized' again, this time on a mossy spot. I knelt down on the ground, with my dress bunched up at the waist. It felt more comfortable and gave me a sense of control. Later, I went again on some fallen leaves. I decided to experiment and stand, with my skirt up and underwear down. It was surprisingly easier than I thought, and I felt really empowered. For the last time, I chose a dirt patch and sat on my heels with my dress pulled up. Each time was different, and each one taught me something new about myself and my body. I also learned about men, one was kind enough to hold his penis and aim his piss, and i was surprised to learn it isn't as easy as it looks."

Alexa Page, 22, Barista "I ended up 'fertilizing' twice during the event, both times wetting myself. The first time, I stood over some gravel, I was wearing a pair of shorts, which I pulled up from 1 leg, and while it was definitely a strange experience, it was also incredibly freeing. After hydrating at the station, I did it a second time, this time over a bed of leaves, I just let it happen, wetting myself. The second time was less daunting somehow, and I felt a strong sense of solidarity with everyone else. I noticed men like to make sure they emptied every drop before putting it away."

Maya Majeed, 20, Biology Major "I participated four times at the 'Pee on Earth' day. Each time I used a different technique and texture. The first time, I hiked my skirt and leaned against a tree on the grass, peeing near it's roots. Post rehydration, my second round was on sand. I lifted my dress and hovered. A group of men watched from a distance, asking questions about how I could hold my dress and maintain my balance at the same time. For the third round, I stood on gravel. I hiked my dress and stood wide, causing some surprise and many questions about the technique among the onlookers, as the stream fell between my legs. My final round was on leaves, where I decided to kneel, which was so discreet that nobody noticed. The hydration station was an excellent facilitator, allowing me to 'fertilize' multiple times. I learned that men are serious about aiming, evenwhen"

Henry Da Costa, 54, Truck Driver: "Because of my job, I piss on Earth every day, not because I care about the environment, but just to relieve myself. I just dropped by between loads because I needed a piss, so I "fertilized" just once, by unzipping, taking a piss, shaking it, and going on my way. I'm glad I could do it without fearing getting caught.

Alam Shafique, 27, Accountant: "I attended the event and 'fertilized' three times. Each time, I 'fertilized' in the standing position, which may seem standard, but usually I sit so this was a new experience. I experimented with different textures: grass, soil, and gravel, all textures offered a unique results, but I would say soil was my favorite due to its absorbing nature. I really enjoyed urinating standing up, I'll definitely do this more often. I learned that women can urinate pretty discreetly, even more than men.

Oliver Danby, 24, Marketing Associate "I participated in the 'Pee on Earth' event twice. My first round was on a leaf pile where I decided to squat, sparking curiosity among the female attendees. They asked me about the comfort and difficulty of this position, and I acknowledged the difference compared to the usual stand-up approach but also the benefits like being closer to the 'target'. After a visit to the hydration station, I chose a grass patch for my second round and attempted a kneeling position. A group of women inquired about the exposure and vulnerability I felt in this stance, prompting a fascinating conversation about the norms and habits we hold so dear. I learned that women may lose control of their bladders by laughing or jumping."

Max Bernard, 21, Graphic Design Intern "The 'Pee on Earth' event was an eye-opener for me. My first 'fertilization' was on a sandy patch where I chose to squat. This piqued the interest of some female participants around me. Surprisingly, one of them, with an aim to understand better, asked if she could help me aim. Initially taken aback, I agreed to let her the next time, figuring the event was about breaking down barriers and promoting understanding. It led to a fascinating discussion about the mechanics of male urination and the importance of aim. Later, after some hydration, I 'fertilized' on some leaves. This time, as that woman aimed, several women were curious about the velocity and volume of the male stream, and I allowed them to observe closely. It was an unusual experience but resulted in some educational conversations. I learned that women actually have to pee in public quite often, but they are more discreet."

Alexander Lee, 23, Medical Student "As a medical student, I thought I was well-versed with the human body and its functions, but the 'Pee on Earth' event proved to be an eye-opener for me. Suffering from pee-shy, unfortunately i couldn't fertilize anything myself, but witnessing a woman experiencing a 'peegasm' was a particularly profound moment. As she was wearing a dress, squatted on the grass, started giggling after a few seconds into the process and her body seemed to tremble slightly. She later explained that she experienced a sudden, intense pleasure while peeing, something she described as a 'peegasm'. This event gave me a greater understanding of the variety of human experiences, beyond the mere mechanics and biology I study at university."

I'm truly sorry I missed this event.

I'd like to think my time there would have been most instructive. I'm sure I would have taken advantage of the hydration stations, or should I say full advantage. And I would have seen to it that I'd experimented with as many surfaces as I had time for.

Not being shy to start up a conversation with strangers, I'm sure I would have made many new friends, at least those of the female gender.
