Hope I'm not being a pain but just wondered what the logo's all mean , a small box in the corner of the male gender box and what are the small glasses for ?

Sorry, I've only just seen this - of course you're not being a pain, feel free to ask any questions you have at any time!

Obviously to the left of every post is details about the poster. The box above their username is their avatar, and you're right that if they haven't changed their avatar then it will default to the male/female symbol. In the corner of the avatar box, a green marker will appear if the user is currently online. This is just a quick way to see who is currently using the forum. As fannywatcher pointed out, this only works if the user hasn't set their online status to hidden.

As for the small glasses next to a thread, this means you're 'watching' the thread and get notifications when there are replies. When you create a new thread there is the option to watch the thread, so there is likely a glasses symbol next to your own threads unless you unchecked this box. You can watch any thread on the forum that you're interested in so that you don't forget about it - the 'watch thread' button is just above all the posts in the thread on the right hand side.

These are only small features, but now you know what they're used for it should make using the forum slightly more convenient.
