Me? What you see here of me, and elsewhere in places where I write about our shared interest, is only a part of me: but we're here, and we'll share that, and very little else.
I am a physically unimposing figure; I like the word 'slim' but 'skinny' will do. Average height, average hair, eyesight a bit below average, mind perhaps above it: but probably not so far above it as I would like to think. I train on weights twice a week - they make no difference to my physique and I will never be muscular - because I like the sensation of physical fitness and the controlled use of strength.
I love to run, and choose to live an inconvenient distance away from my work, simply so that I can run in the forest in the cold of the mornings. I walk a lot, and cycle bit: a chance to think my own thoughts and, sometimes, set in order the things I choose to write. I am a black belt in a Budo art, and practice regularly: mostly, I study it because I like the sensation of bodily grace and balance in my movements; I have no need of it for self-defence, as all of us life-long practitioners in the art have learned far more about walking with people, and working with people, de-escalation and non-contention, than we'll ever teach about striking and blocking and making 'opponents' where there are none.
I dress well, and pay a good tailor: being thin means off-the peg clothing doesn't fit. Clothes that do fit, having been made for you, project a discreet impression of being at ease, and I have discovered a talent for putting others at their ease when I choose to do so. Be warned, however, that light conversation and the subtle gift of getting people to talk about themselves are a magician's hand, hiding things in plain view and concealing far more than it reveals: you really can learn nothing in an evening - or a day, or a year - spent working with me. So go ahead and ask interesting questions.
