Peeing for pleasure: evolutionary or cultural?

Recommended Posts

A sexual interest in pee is not limited to humans. Many animals use pee as territorial markings, but for some there is also a sexual element, with some species attracted to these pee markings when seeking out mates, with the pee therefore having obvious sexual connotations for that species. With some the sexuality of pee is directly obvious. For example, male giraffes taste the pee of females before proceeding to mating. This is actually a standard part of their mating behaviour.

However, animal species differ from us in that, where pee is in any way associated with sexual activity, it tends to be standard behaviour for that particular species. This is not true of us. While there are many millions of pee fetishists in the world, we are sadly only a minority of the human population, greatly outnumbered by those who are indifferent or amused by such things. And millions of people are overtly disgusted by it. I have my own word for the latter - disgustathons - and we have all encountered them.

For us, peeing is a minority sexual interest of a fetishistic nature. The evolution of fetishes however would also be the basis of interesting speculation. Other species tend not to show signs of fetishistic behaviour, in the sense that a minority of them have wholly specialist sexual interests different from the majority of their species. Fetishes do seem to be unique to us (unless the habit of a dog I once knew of hopping aboard any outstretched leg in sight and attempting to fuck it like crazy was some kind of human leg fetish..lol). How fetishes evolved probably has a lot to do with the greater complexities of the human brain, with our much greater cognitive ability when it comes to vivid imagination, and symbolic and lateral thinking. Fetishism is probably merely one by-product of this cognitive ability.

As for the development of pee fetishism itself, the taboo and private aspects of peeing, an inherently natural activity intimately involving the very same genital areas later associated with sex, is taylor made for a sexual fixation. Growing up, oftentimes the only times we ever see the genitalia of the opposite gender is when we see them peeing. And we never see and rarely know about the genitals being used for anything other than peeing until we grow older. Genitals are thought by us to exist purely for peeing. And the fact that peeing is regarded as a private and at the same time dirty thing does seem to increase it's potential for fetishistic fixation.

To demonstrate this, I will point out that knee and ankle fetishists were a significant minority back in Victorian times, when prudery of such instensity that even to see a female ankle or knee on display was considered grossly indecent. Now of course, ankle and knee fetishists are almost non-existent. This to me demonstrates that our interest in pee is more likely to be cultural than evolutionary. If we all grew up in environments where peeing in front of each other all the time was normal behaviour and not some private taboo, chances are there would be far fewer pee fetishists around. It is the private and taboo nature of it that seems to lie at the root of the development of our sexual interest in it.

But whilst we full-blown pee fetishists do have what are clearly paraphiliac and minority interests regarding pee - getting off on such things as pee drinking and golden showers, peeing all over the place, wetting, or being desperate, there may well be an evolutionary element too for the wider interest in just seeing someone pee. I have long believed that merely seeing an attractive member of the opposite sex pee is much more common to the point of being a majority interest for our species. Because it is mostly done in private we see it a lot less than our primitive ancestors might have, so many of those who do not develop a sexual fixation upon pee probably don't think about it all that often. But an interest in the sight of a member of the opposite sex peeing is probably a standard and mainstream part of sexual behaviour for our species, which there is a tendency for many to hide through fear of being thought of as a pervert. Such an interest may well have served an evolutionary purpose, eg urine containing sexual pheremones that attract a a potential sexual partner via scent, for example, perhaps leading to a more general interest amongst our species in potential partners peeing?

In fact, the fact that something so innately natural for our species - seeing and enjoying the sight of sexually attractive members of the opposite sex peeing - is something we are conditioned to view as private and taboo, even dirty, probably feeds powerfully into the development of pee fetishism. It has been demonstrated by psychological case histories that excessive repression of natural sexuality does make individuals more prone to the development of fetishes around their innate sexual interests. I do therefore rather suspect that pee fetishism is somewhat more widespread than most believe, but with many totally in the closet about their secret interests and never rocking up on forums such as this. Many others are no doubt in denial even to themselves.

In fact, many of those I call disgustathons may fall into this latter category. Raised into believing that pee is dirty and disgusting in every way, they cannot accept their own interest in it deep down, which they both hate and repress. They then "project" this hatred and disgust, so powerfully felt because of their own repressed desires, onto anyone who manifests any overt sexual interest in pee. This kind of thing is actually well understood in regards to homosexuals - many of the worst homophobes are often closet gays themselves in denial about their own sexuality. I strongly believe that a similar process is driving the serious negativity towards us of the worst urophobic disgustathons - ie they are really closet urophiles in denial in many cases.
